Filmmakers Special

The Bermuda International Film Festival education initiatives aim to broaden and diversify the arthouse cinema audiences and future filmmakers. Through the Film Academy’s community outreach efforts, our initiatives will shape and inform future audiences of every age.

Books to Film

Each year we deliver to Bermuda an important education programme designed to reach the island’s younger generation through the imagination and attention grabbing medium of storytelling. The Books to Film programme is the Festival’s education initiative focusing on visual literacy learning in Primary Schools. Classes from Primary 1-4 are invited to come experience an exciting programme of reading and film. Storybooks are read to Primary School children followed by a screening of a film adaption. This format is designed to encourage enthusiasm for both reading and high quality films. BIFF introduces the films and leads discussions, as well as provides materials to help teachers integrate the programme into the classroom following the screening.

Reel Talk

Reel Talk offers an exclusive opportunity for middle and high school students to attend the screening of a socially relevant documentary film during the Festival. The programme is designed to stimulate students to think about issues of global importance. Experts on film, ethics, and other disciplines speak to the subjects of the film after the screening, providing a fascinating and accessible out-of-the-classroom lesson. Whenever possible, directors are in attendance for Q&As.

Student Filmmaker Workshop

These workshops are traditionally held during the fall mid-term break in the school’s year. Workshops give students aged 11 to 14 the opportunity to make their very own short films. Over the course of one week students learn the skills of directing, storyboarding, editing and screenwriting with instruction and hands-on experience from industry professionals. The short films are showcased on screen for family and friends at the completion of the workshop.

BIFF Live Talks

A series of panel discussions featuring actors, directors, critics and other industry insiders talking about all aspects of film.

Master Classes

A two-day seminar chiefly focusing on several aspects of filmmaking from funding to production, directing, or writing. Master classes provide an opportunity for prominent figures from the world of cinema to share their experience and memories about their area of expertise in filmmaking. Attendees have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session at the end of the class.
